本日は天皇誕生日ということで、日本の弥栄を心静かに祈りました。「平成」もあと5ヶ月程となりました。
僕は、ビジネスで英語という言語を教えるようになってから自然と日本語のことも興味が湧いて調べるようになり、日本という国についてもあらためて学ぶ機会が多くなりました。顧客が経営者ということもあって神社仏閣について研究を始めたのが9年前。結果、日本語そのものと、日本文化とその精神性などの知識が脳の中でうまく融合し合って、あらためて自分が生まれ育った日本という国がとっても素晴らしい国だと最近感じています。
さて、僕が信じている日本建国の歴史だと、紀元前660年前に神武天皇が日本を建国して2018年現在で皇紀2678年になります。来年の2月には2679年。オリンピックの開催される2020年には2680年になります。
日本は一つの王朝が治め続けているダントツ最長の国家になるそうで、2位はサンマリノの1700年。3位はデンマークの1000年。4位はイギリスで950年となります。
日本はこれだけ長い歴史を誇る国なのでとんでもない叡知がまだまだ眠っていると思っています。そして最近では、それを少しづつ読み解いていくのが自分のライフワークの一つになりつつあります。
ところで、世界各国の大使が日本に赴任する際に、まずは陛下に謁見する信任状捧呈式という行事が組まれます。たまたま先日、その行事のために東京駅から皇居に向かうある大使が乗っている儀装馬車を見る機会があったのですが、とても厳かで優雅。よき伝統と感じました。ちなみに服装は昼の正礼装です。
英語の視点では、日本の皇室は英語で「The Imperial Family」となっていて、天皇陛下は「Emperor of Japan」になります。

天皇陛下は、"emperor"の血統を「男系」でずっと継続していて、神武天皇が建国してから王朝が変わったことがないため、地球上でただおひとりの「emperor（皇帝）」と呼ばれる存在です。決してロイヤルファミリーではないので「king」ではなく、国際慣例上、国王よりも格上です。なので世界各国の国王や大統領は、陛下に90度のお辞儀をします。
そういう事を知るたびに、なんだか日本人としての誇りを感じます。

Because it is the Emperor's Birthday today, I was quietly praying for Japan's prosperity.
Since I started teaching English for business, I naturally became interested in Japanese, so I got more opportunities to relearn about Japan as a country. It was nine years ago when my customer, who was also a business executive, started researching about shrines and temples. As a result, the Japanese language itself and the knowledge of the Japanese culture along with its spirituality had merged inside my brain, and it made me feel once again that the country of Japan in which I was born and raised was a wonderful country.
Well, according to the version of history of founding of the country of Japan in which I believe, Emperor Jimmu established Japan before the year 660 BC, so that way the year 2018 becomes the Imperial year 2678. It will be the year 2679 in February of the next year. The Olympic Games will be held in 2020 which will be the year 2680. That way, Japan turns out to be the nation with the longest continuous rule by the same dynasty with the second place belonging to San Marino with its 1700 years. The third place belongs to Denmark with 1000 years. The UK has fourth place with 950 years of history.
Since Japan is a country which boasts such a long history, I think that there is a lot of yet undiscovered wisdom in it. Also, gradually discovering it has recently become one of my life's work.
When an ambassador from overseas comes to Japan, an event called the Ceremony of the Presentation of Credentials involving audience with the Emperor is held. Recently there was an opportunity for me to see the ceremonial carriage in which an ambassador was heading for the event from Tokyo Station to the Imperial Palace and it was very solemn and elegant. I felt that it was a good tradition. By the way, the clothes for the ceremony were formal clothes for day ceremonies.
From the point of view of the English language, the Japanese Imperial family is called "The Imperial Family", and the Emperor is addressed as the "Emperor of Japan". The Emperor’s line has always continued through male heirs, and because the dynasty has not changed since Emperor Jimmu established it, the Emperor gets to be the only one on Earth to be called the "emperor".
Since it is not at all just a royal family, he is not the "king", but is higher in position than kings according to international conventions. So, kings and presidents worldwide will bow to the Emperor at the angle of 90 degrees.
Every time I get to know such things, I somehow feel proud as a Japanese.
And today was the day when I wanted to write about this.
